Portland Bill Lighthouse

Portland Bill lighthouse is 41-metre-high and has been safeguarding shipping and seafarers since 1906. It superseded the old high and low lighthouses that had been operating in various forms in the area since the eighteenth century.

Sunset over Lake Pier

Lake Pier Beach is located on the Northern shore of Poole harbour, in Hamworthy. The old wooden pier jutting out into the harbour was once a landing point for clay for local potters.

Durdle Door, Dorset

Durdle Door was formed about 140 million years ago. Today, there are still round ripple marks visible in the rock at the top of the arch, the remains of a fossil forest. Geologists predict that over time, the roof of Durdle Door will be eroded away, leaving just a stack.

Island

Old quarrys, Warmwell, is a former RAF station in Dorset, from 1937 to 1946, located about 5 miles east-southeast of Dorchester. The airfield has now been occupied by a quarry which has effectively removed all trace of the flying field. The original northern taxiway being still in use as a road through the nearby village of Crossways. More recent development of the area is Silverlake, a development of sustainable holiday homes located in this wildly beautiful environment set among historic heathlands, woodland and lakes.

Low Lighthouse, Burnham-On-Sea

Burnham-On-Sea in Somerset has the iconic wooden beach lighthouse on nine legs. Built in 1832 and is now a Grade II Heritage listed structure. Burnham-On-Sea lighthouse was also named on a list of the world’s top 10 most beautiful lighthouses in 2014.

Stourhead Lake

Stourhead is a 1,072-hectare (2,650-acre) estate at the source of the River Stour near Mere, Wiltshire, England. The estate includes a Palladian mansion, the village of Stourton, gardens, farmland, and woodland. Stourhead has been part owned by the National Trust since 1946.

Lulworth Cove, Dorset

One of the most striking sites on Dorset’s Jurassic Coast, Lulworth Cove is world famous for its pre-historic geology and landforms. The cove was formed by the sea breaking through a thin layer of hard Portland stone that runs parallel to the shoreline. Once the sea broke through, the waves allowed for the much softer clays to be eroded more quickly and thoroughly. The area around Lulworth Cove also contains a fossil forest, the remains of an ancient, submerged forest from Jurassic times. It is thought to be one of the most complete fossilised forests of any age.

Swanage Old Pier

The first Swanage Pier (remains shown here) which was 750 feet long, was built between 1859 and 1860 for use primarily by the local stone quarrying industry and included a tramway which ran the length of the pier and some way along the seafront. The old tracks can be seen to this day, inset into the seafront walkways.

Rock Arch

This man-made rock arch on the Isle of Portland was presumably made by the quarrymen who worked the stone in days gone by.

Lulworth Cove

In all there are four Palladian bridges left in the world, one at Prior Park Somerset, one at Stowe in Buckinghamshire and another in Wilton, Wiltshire. This photo shows the Palladian Bridge at Stour head in Wiltshire.

Evening light on Bowleaze Cove Pier

Bowleaze Cove is a small sand and shingle beach, near the village of Preston, just to the northeast of Weymouth, Dorset. The beach is made up of mainly shingle and shell with some sandy areas. This small pier divides the beach near the river Jordan outflow. The remains of a Roman Temple are located nearby.

Chesil Beach

Chesil Beach, also called Chesil Bank, found in the county of Dorset, stretches 18 miles (29 km) from Bridport to the Isle of Portland. One of the best-known natural features in Britain, it consists of shingle (pebbles), 98.5 percent of which is hard flint or chert rock. From Abbotsbury to Portland (12 miles [19 km]) the beach is separated from the mainland by a lagoon. The most remarkable feature of the beach is the lateral sorting of the shingle: at the north-western end it is pea-sized, and at Portland the average diameter of the stones is 2 inches (5 cm).

Birnbeck Pier

Birnbeck pier at Western Super Mare opened in 1867, having been designed to attract the thousands of visitors brought by paddle steamers from all over the Bristol Channel. Over a hundred years later, the pier is closed to the public, and visitors need special permission to brave the rotting wooden decks.

Man of War Cove

Steps are shown leading down to this natural bay comprises white sand and fine pebbles. A line of pronounced rocks runs intermittently about 100 metres from the shore partially enclosing the cove.

Peveril Point

Peveril Point is a promontory on the east-facing coast of the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset, and is part of the town of Swanage. It forms the southern end of Swanage Bay

Corfe Castle Train Station

Corfe Castle railway station is located in the village of the same name, in the county of Dorset. Originally an intermediate station on the London and Southwestern Railway (L&SWR) branch line from Wareham to Swanage, the line and station were closed by British Rail in 1972. It has since reopened as a station on the Swanage Railway, a heritage railway that runs from Norden station just north of Corfe Castle to Swanage station.

Old Harry Rocks

Old Harry Rocks are three chalk formations, including a stack and a stump, located at Handfast Point, on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset. They mark the most eastern point of the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Marker Post, Ringstead Bay

The small village of Ringstead sits at the eastern end of Ringstead Bay on the Jurassic Coast in Dorset. The bay is mainly pebble and shingle with some sandy patches. There are offshore reefs at the bays western end that are uncovered at low tide.

Pulpit Rock, Isle of Portland

Lying near the southern tip of the Isle of Portland, is Pulpit Rock. It is an artificial rock stack jutting out from the rocky coast at Portland Bill. The stack is not a natural geological formation but was created in the 1870’s when a natural arch of rock was cut away by workmen from a nearby Quarry.

Tenby, Wales

Tenby's roots date back to the time of the Norman Conquest when the county was invaded and colonised in around 1093. Much of the medieval castle walls, built by the Pembrokeshire Earls in 1264 to fortify the town from Welsh rebellion, have survived intact to the present day.

Kingston Maurward House

Kingston Maurward House is a large Grade I listed Georgian English country house set in a 750-acre estate in Dorset situated in the Frome valley two miles east of Dorchester.

Stepping Stones

These large stones set out into Bramble Bush Bay within Poole harbour are actually anti-tank defences, presumably placed there during the second world war.

Dome

The National Botanic Garden of Wales is located in Llanarthney in the River Tywi valley, Carmarthenshire, Wales. The garden is both a visitor attraction and a centre for botanical research and conservation, and features the world's largest single-span glasshouse, measuring 110 m (360 ft) long by 60 m (200 ft) wide.
